Briggs Preparatory School was founded in September 1975,  by Malcolm and Esmee Briggs, to offer an alternative approach to Primary Education during the period when and where corporal punishment was applied to good learning making it difficult for some children to learn with their self esteem intact. Briggs therefore, targeted those children who found it difficult to perform within the traditional learning systems used in other primary schools

The legacy of both Mr. And Mrs. Briggs, which worked in the past continues to provide many more young minds with a home in which to learn, with love and understanding. The graduates leave with a sense of value for self and others, modesty and finesse in additional to high academic achievements. The school is a private primary school preparing children, between the ages of 3 to 13 years, for secondary education.

Initially Briggs was located at 167-169 Belmont Circular Road opposite Providence Girls School. It was always Mrs. Briggs’ policy that no child should be subjected to pass or fail at such tender ages for entry and therefore our method for entry is based on general assessment. The student is invited to spend some time in the proposed class prior to entry (there is no fee) and his or her text books are examined to make an assessment for placement.

Esmee  Majorie Briggs tutored in Mathematics at Bishop Girls High School in Port of Spain, then moved on to be the first Principal of UWI Primary School in St. Augustine. She was fondly called … Mrs O, Mrs. Briggs or Esmee.  Mr. Briggs was respected by all as he managed the administration and financial aspects of the school.
